Canada's engagement in the Second World War officially began on 10 September 1939. At the end of the war in 1945, more than 45,000 Canadians had lost their lives. In all, about 70 million people were killed on the Allied and Axis sides. The 16 million men and women who served in the U.S. armed forces, the 400,000 who died in the war, and the millions of Americans who supported the war effort from home are honoured at a national site in Washington, D.C. Shown in the photograph is the National World War II Memorial that was dedicated on 29 May 2004 by George W. Bush, President of the United States. Erected at an estimated cost of $182 million and 59 years after the war, it is considered the last major Second World War memorial to be raised anywhere.

On this day, 10 September 2022, we commemorate the 83rd anniversary of when Canada officially declared war on Germany.
